The EU Debt Clock is an independent, non-commercial project that respects the privacy of all visitors.
This website does not collect, store or sell personally identifiable information (PII), does not require user accounts and does not profile visitors.
Only minimal technical data is processed where strictly necessary to ensure security, functionality and protection against abuse.
1. Cookies
The EU Debt Clock uses:
- Essential technical cookies — required for security features such as Google reCAPTCHA and basic page rendering.
- No tracking cookies — we do not set cookies to track user behaviour, browsing history or identity.
- Third-party cookies (only if advertising is enabled) — Google AdSense may place cookies for ad delivery and fraud prevention.
Visitors can manage or delete cookies via their browser settings. This website does not use a cookie banner because no non-essential cookies are placed by default.
2. Analytics
The EU Debt Clock does not use Google Analytics, Matomo or any analytics platform that tracks individual users.
Basic, anonymous server logs may be generated by the hosting provider (e.g. IP address, browser type, timestamp) for:
- security monitoring,
- fraud prevention,
- technical performance diagnostics.
These logs are automatically deleted according to standard server retention policies.
3. Google reCAPTCHA
The contact form uses Google reCAPTCHA v3 to protect against spam and automated abuse.
reCAPTCHA may analyse browser and device characteristics to assess whether a request is legitimate. This process is governed entirely by Google.

4. Contact Form
When you submit a message via the contact form, the following data is transmitted by email:
- Name
- Email address
- Message content
- IP address (for spam protection)
This information is:
- not stored in a database,
- used solely to respond to your enquiry,
- not shared with third parties,
- deleted after the request is handled.
5. Data Sources & Website Content
All financial and demographic figures displayed on this website originate from Eurostat Open Data, the official statistical authority of the European Union.
The EU Debt Clock does not combine Eurostat data with third-party datasets. Real-time values shown on the site are mathematical estimations derived from official releases.
6. Your Rights (GDPR)
Although this website does not store personal data, visitors from the European Union retain all rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), including the right to:
- request information about any personal data processed (normally none),
- request deletion of contact emails previously sent,
- request correction of inaccurate information.
